PADOW Events 2010
Winter Splash 2010 Wow, what a conference we had this year. Despite the hard economic times, turn out was great, and participation was at an all-time high. We want to thank all the sponsors, BioMarin Pharmaceuticals, Applied Nutrition, Vita Flo USA, Nutricia North America, and Cambrooke Foods. We would also like to thanks PKU Perspectives, Dietary Specialties, and Med-Diet for their contributions to the conference.
Before the conference was underway, we have a few changes that completely changed the feel of the weekend. On Friday night, we celebrated PADOW’s 5th birthday party with balloons, drawings, a caricature artist, food, and a wonderful PKU birthday cake. On Saturday, before the program began, we recognized Dr. Gregory Rice with the 1st ever PADOW Professionals Service Award. Dr. Rice has thoughtlessly given his time and generosity to PADOW, and has never asked anything in return. Thank you very much Dr. Rice, and congratulations!
Saturday’s program included keynote Dr. Kevin Antshel from SUNY Upstate Medical University, who presented on the connections between PKU and ADHD. Our afternoon speakers included Rachel Kaup, an adult from Boston who spoke about executive function, and her personal battles with it. Other afternoon speakers included Jessica Zimmerman, McKenzie Richard, and Rebecca Schertz, who briefly discussed having PKU and answered questions from the attendees while entertaining them as well. Thanks to all the speakers for your time and commitment.
Upcoming Events April 10th – Spring Cooking Class sponsored by BioMarin For our second straight year, we are pleased to be putting on a cooking class with the help of UW-Steven Point professor Judie Pffiffner and her students. This year, sponsored by BioMarin, Chef Jeff will lead us through recipes before we all work together to create a feast for everyone to try. RSVP deadline for this event was originally announced at the Winter Splash conference for March 18th, but has recently been moved back to March 25th. Please email Andrew at agfountaine@yahoo.com or call him at (608) 354-2291. May 22nd – Tin Can Drive May is PKU awareness month, so PADOW has planned and will kick off a month long effort around the state to collect aluminum cans and recycle them at statewide centers for money to support the organization and research. On May 22nd, officers and family members in the Madison area will get together in Waunakee to collect cans from the communities. Volunteers are still needed for this event. Our goal for the state-wide, month long event has been set at $1,000, with proceeds to be split, one half for PADOW, one half for research. Andrew is still looking for interested parties that can hold similar can drives in their area of the state. Interested persons should contact Andrew at (608) 354-2291 for more details and assistance for your area. Monetary donations can be given to help reach the goal, please contact Andrew if you have any questions. June 6th – Wisconsin Rapids Rafters Baseball – Opening Night PADOW has acquired a limited number of seats for the opening night of the Northwoods League’s newest team, the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters. Game time is 6:05pm, and this game is the one you want to go see if you can only get to one this year. Massive giveaways, fun games, and the future stars of baseball can all be seen under the wonderful summer sky of central Wisconsin. Before the game starts, PADOW will have a table set up near the front gate, promoting our Penny Drive, and handing out water bottles. Stop by and say hello – and you could be the winner of a free treat while you watch the game! Tickets are available through Andrew, and will be left at the ballpark’s will call stand before the game. Please try to limit ticket requests to those surely attending, and we would be happy to provide more for the rest of your family and friends if there is any leftover. June 27th – Vita Flo’s Day at Miller Park Join Vita Flo USA, PADOW, and the Wisconsin Metabolic Clinics for a day at Miller Park. The Milwaukee Brewers take on the Seattle Mariners, who now have Ken Griffey Jr. back in their lineup. It promises to be an exciting game. Before the game, those attending can relax in the Beer Garden Restaurant and join fellow PKUers and their families for lunch and conversation. After lunch, make your way to your seats and cheer for a Brewer’s win and watch Bernie Brewer slide down his Home Run Slide. Information about RSVPing for this event will be sent out from you clinics. Everyone should receive them on the same day – so everyone has the same chance of getting seats. There are only 100 seats available for this game, and tickets will be distributed according to the information you will receive. Mark this date on your calendar, because you won’t want to miss it! July 31st – Madison Mallards Baseball Join us at the Duck Pond as the Madison Mallards host their new Southern Division Rivals, the Rafters of Wisconsin Rapids. Once again, PADOW will have a table at the front gate, promoting our Penny Drive and handing out water bottles. Stop by the table and say hello for a chance to win a special treat during the game! Tickets can be requested by contacting Andrew, or by emailing him, or calling (608) 354-2291. Please request only the number of tickets of sure attendees, and we will attempt to get you any extras you need if they are available before the game. Tickets will be left at the will call hut outside the game before the game. Come out to the Duck Pond, and witness the future of baseball! September 11th – Fall Picnic 2010 What better day to have a picnic and celebrate the end of the summer by a picnic on Patriot’s Day. Due to rave reviews and so many positive responses, we have once again chosen Neenah’s Riverside Park for the Fall Picnic. Grilled delights, fun for everyone, raffles, and vendors make up one of the most attended picnic locations that we have ever had, and there’s always a surprise up the sleeve of the planning committee. Look for more information to be coming to you in a mailing towards the middle of the summer.
